Maintenance of the Gas Fireplace
Be safe and have your gas appliances inspected and serviced annually.
Whenever you have a gas appliance whether it be a gas log fireplace, stove or furnace you should have it inspected and maintained annually. With a gas log fireplace one of the most important maintenance issues is to have the chimney inspected and cleaned to avoid any flare up fires within the chimney itself.
If you have a vent free gas fireplace maintenance is really an important issue. You will want to have the burner checked annually to be sure that it is in good working order as a dirty or poorly working one can cause soot and even carbon monoxide in some cases.
About Types of Gas
The different types of gas your gas log fireplace can be fueled by.
There are two types of fuel used for gas log systems. Natural gas is the most popular choice as it is typically less expensive, cleaner burning and usually supplied by a public utility through gas mains. Natural gas is lighter than air so if you ever have a gas leak the natural gas will typically rise and dissipate much quicker than propane gas. Propane is the other option for gas logs. Propane is usually found in more rural areas where natural gas lines are not run and is typically stored on site in large propane tanks. Propane is delivered via private propane companies which will typically allow for higher gas rates than natural gas. Propane is also a very heavy gas and tends to pool or sit in low spots, which can cause concern over use in gas burning fireplaces.
